Dissapoinment At Dad’s
Finally July 20th arrived and it was time for the wine tasting at my parent’s wine club. They live in South New Jersey, not too far from Atlantic City in a very nice retirement community. When I write retirement community I do not mean a “home” or assisted living facility. It’s just a suburban development of houses where you have to be 55 or older to live. Being that folks are living longer and are healthier at older ages, other than the gray hair they mostly seam pretty spry and fun to be around. I especially like their friend Tony who has mad wine knowledge.
The theme for this months tasting was Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. I wanted to bring down a bottle of the 2003 Cantina Zaccagnini (I will review this wine soon), but my father had bought a bottle for the tasting so I brought the 2005 – Villa Reale, Vigne Nuove that I wrote about not liking a couple of weeks ago. Of course my father drank the 2003 Zaccagnini so we substituted it with the 2004. I bought a bottle of the 2004 about a month ago and it’s just nowhere near as good as the 2003. I found the 2004 – Cantina Zaccagnini to be sour and flat with none of the dimension of the 2003. It had notes of sour cherry and semi tight tannins. It just went nowhere. Sadly the 2003 seems now to be unavailable.
Unfortunately out of the seven wines that were brought and were tasted blindly, four turned out to be the 2004 Cantina Zaccagnini. I caught three of them. I think the fourth Zaccagnini was slightly corked so I missed it. That left two others that I haven’t given notes on. One was the 2006 – Bricco al Sole. It was truly disgusting. It tasted like Ny-Quil gone bad. The other was the 2003 – Nicodemi, Dei Colli Venia. It tasted and smelled of eucalyptuses and herbs and was wholly unpleasant.
The good part of the evening was the company and the mass amounts of food brought for a total of seven couples.
My people know how to eat.
