Kitchen winefridge

My wife Ting and I just bought our first home. A huge prewar apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens. I’m sorry to leave behind the movement of Manhattan, but the trade-off in space makes it a no contest. 280 square feet to 1400 square feet.

When I first went to see it, I saw that in the kitchen was a 50 bottle built-in Vinotemp wine cellar. I swear, I got a little choked-up. Vinotemp is not a brand that I would trust long term with my finest bottles, but I figure I’ll keep it at drinking temperature, and keep more bottles at the ready. Of course I will still have my 3-temp EuroCave.

We should be moved in by the end of May or the start of June. If you want to see more pictures of the apartment go here. That’s not our furniture and stuff in the place, it’s the sellers.

Wine Truth Video Podcast on iTunes

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I want to announce my video podcast. Every week I make a video pertaining to wine. So far I’ve just reviewed wines, but in the future I will do other things like talking to experts, visiting vineyards and other stuff. Yeah, other stuff.

If you click on the podcast link below it should bring you to my page in iTunes. There you can subscribe to my feed, and my videos will automatically be downloaded free. Then you can watch me on your iPod or iPhone wherever you are.

I’m having some problems with my camera so there are some technical problems. The sound drops out at times. I am working to fix this.

My Top 10 Wine Shops (This one goes to 11)

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I was supposed to post my weekly video today, but my DV deck is not working. I borrowed one from work and I will have episode #4 up tomorrow morning.

Today I want to give you a list of my favorite wine shops on and off-line.

1) Bottlerocket
5 West 19th Street
New York, NY 10011

Bottlerocket has to be my number one. Though not huge, it has a very good selection. Their staff is knowledgeable and helpful and the space itself is airy and well designed.

I hate looking at myself. I scrunch up my forehead. I look like a monkey. Do I need Botox?

Video Episode #1:
2006 – Produttori del Barbaresco, Langhe ($19)

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008
Review: 2006 – Produttori del Barbaresco, Langhe ($19)

I forgot to mention a couple of things in video. The maker of the wine is Produttori del Barbaresco and Langhe Nebbiolo is a sub-region of Piedmont. Piedmont is in Italy.

Also, looking back at the video, I don’t think it was clear that I thought this wine was really fantastic. After another hour of air it softened up a little. There was a lot more flavor and more complexity. There was more fruit and it had a very good mouth-feel. The nose lost that Converse sneaker scent and became more floral. The 2006 Produttori del Barbaresco weighs is at a low 13.5% alcohol.

I think that given more time in the bottle the tannins will soften up a lot and this will be a really lush wine.

In the future I’ll try to keep the videos shorter. I’ll also get a little closer to the camera. Honestly, it’s nerve racking being in front of, opposed to behind, the camera.
